Inspiration comes from observations of everyday people. What is exposed through body language and the body’s relationship to the environment reveals more about our shared human experience than the full knowledge of individual stories.

My longtime interest in the figure stems from my fascination with nonverbal communication and what it reveals. I became drawn to the figure in the urban landscape while commuting to my studio in NE Minneapolis. I was intrigued by how the environment became an additional non- verbal element of identity.

By playing with the arrangement of formal elements; flat shape relationships, composition and division of space, I hope to create a metaphorical space that expresses a mood or psychological tension in an attempt to reveal something universal about being human.

All work is acrylic on wood panel.
